Pittsburgh History and Landmarks hosts a virtual architecture tour of Oakland on April 27, 2021.

Since 1889, when Mary Croghan Schenley donated 300 acres to the City of Pittsburgh to create a major park in Oakland, the neighborhood has become a great civic, cultural, medical, and educational center. This tour focuses on the portion of central Oakland that is bounded roughly by University Place, Fifth Avenue, N. Bellefield Avenue, and the residential district of Schenley Farms. Participants will learn how the visions of architect Henry Hornbostel, real estate developer Franklin Nicola, and University of Pittsburgh Chancellor John Bowman shaped Oakland’s urban plan and character. The impact of historic preservation and adaptive reuse of old buildings also will be explored.
