In response to the lack of investment in Pittsburgh's 800+ public staircases - an important piece of Pittsburgh's pedestrian network, history and cultural identity - the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) has begun to develop a prioritization plan for repairing and revitalizing our most important staircases. The City used spatial analysis, public input, and field visits to create a prioritized list of steps. They also reviewed public step maintenance and repair best practices from other U.S. cities and developed guidance about step materials and design.
